The National Party of Suriname congratulates the entire Surinamese community, especially our Maroon brothers and sisters, on Maroon Day. Today we commemorate October 10, 1760, the day on which the Ndyuka signed the peace treaty with the colonial government.
After years of resistance and struggle, our ancestors chose peace and freedom at home and in our country in general. It was the beginning of a hundred years of freedom before the abolition of slavery in 1863. That freedom struggle, from the Boston Band to the granmans of Saamaka, Matawai, Aluku, Kwinti and Paamaka, is one of the pillars of our Surinamese identity; our principle of equality.
“The financing of our ideals will only be possible if the distribution of income from our natural resources is fair and balanced in the city, district and the distant interior”
Three key points
Recognition and development: The Maroon communities represent a significant part of our population. Access to education, health care, electricity and infrastructure in the interior must be equal. Against this background, phasing out electricity subsidies should not lead to energy poverty in villages that only have diesel power for four to six hours a day.
Culture as a force: The pangithe music, the languages and the traditional authority structures are national heritage. The Maroon Legacy Month, which ends today, contains entrepreneurship that we as NPS highly support.
Unity in diversity: Maroons, Javanese, Hindustanis, indigenous people, Creoles, Chinese and all other population groups have a brotherly place within the NPS. The strength of Suriname lies in working together and nothing else.
The NPS calls on all Surinamese people today to reflect on the meaning of freedom and to work together on nation building and development of our country. The financing of our ideals will only be possible if the distribution of income from our natural resources is fair and balanced in the city, district and the distant interior.
