Just two years after hosting the Micronesian Games, Marshall Islands has an even bigger sporting event on the horizon after the country’s athletics federation secured the rights to stage the Oceania Cup in 2027.
A track and field competition with a twist, it is expected to attract the best athletes from across the Pacific, together with teams from Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.
And the hope is it will encourage more Marshall islanders to take up sport and get fit in a country which like so many across the Pacific has a major problem with NCDs – non communicable diseases.
