Disaster preparedness in the North has been strengthened with the opening of a new evacuation centre at the Vuniyalayala Narayan Mandir in Labasa.
Speaking at the opening, Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu said the facility symbolised Government’s commitment to improving the lives of rural dwellers.
“As a reminder of why this Government is so committed to uplifting our rural communities, I acknowledge the tireless efforts of our agencies, development partners, global leaders, and the many hands, both seen and unseen, that have made this day possible,” he said.
Mr Bulitavu said the evacuation centre was more than just a structure.
“It is a promise — a deliverable promise that when disaster strikes, no one will be left behind.
“It ensures families have a safe place to stay together, children have space to rest, and the vulnerable receive the protection they deserve.”
He said the centre was built to humanitarian standards and would also serve as a community hub during normal times, hosting training, meetings and preparedness programs.
“In recent years, we have seen how cyclones, floods, and other natural hazards can disrupt lives in an instant.
“This investment aligns with the National Development Plan, focusing on uplifting the social and economic wellbeing of our people.”
He urged the community to take ownership of the facility.
“A building alone cannot protect us. It is our collective responsibility to ensure it is maintained, respected and used wisely.”
He said the opening marked a step towards a safer and more resilient future.
The project was made possible with an investment of $32,000.
