Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has set aside funds to continue work on improving roads, bridges and stairs in East Greenland’s largest city – We need that, says member of the municipal council Justus Hansen (D), who lives in Tasiilaq on a daily basis.
The 2,000 or so citizens of Tasiilaq can look forward to better roads and a strengthened infrastructure in the city.
In Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq’s latest budget agreement for 2025–2026
funds have been set aside to improve the roads and strengthen the infrastructure in Tasiilaq.
“Good and well-functioning roads are a prerequisite for safety in everyday life, for a well-functioning business life and for the city’s continued development. At the same time, the solutions must take into account nature, the climate and Tasiilaq’s special culture and history,” reads a press release from the municipality.
The goal is for it to be easier, safer and more secure to move around the city – both for citizens, visitors and businesses.

10 million kroner for asphalt
One of the efforts is to continue the work on asphalting the city’s roads, for which 10 million has been allocated. kroner in the budget this year. The asphalting should improve accessibility and reduce wear, dust and unevenness in everyday life.
In addition, 10 million has been set aside. kroner per year from 2026 until 2029 for ongoing restoration and maintenance of roads, bridges and stairs, which does not only apply to Tasiilaq, but the entire municipality.
Tasiilaq needs a boost
Long-standing member of the municipal board and of Inatsisartut, Justus Hansen (D), who is also from Tasiilaq, is satisfied with the prioritization.
– It is of course good. We need that. The infrastructure in the city is not modern. Our roads are very narrow and this creates some critical situations, especially in winter. In addition, we will hopefully get an airport before too long, and that will also create increased pressure from tourists on the city’s infrastructure.

Waste management
The budget agreement also states that the operating payment to the waste company ESANI will continue so that the reception station in Tasiilaq can function stably.
The receiving station has already gone through the first preliminary investigation, and the work is thus longer in the process than just an initial clarification.
Finally, work must continue with the plans for an expansion of the material yard in Tasiilaq, which will create better working conditions for operation and maintenance and make it possible to solve tasks more efficiently and with higher quality.
According to Justus Hansen, it is also about freeing up the area next to the equipment yard for private traders.
Pier extension
Finally, it is also mentioned in the budget agreement that the possibilities of filling up stones at the pier north of the city must be investigated in order to thereby create a more stable and robust foundation that can support future activities and business development in the area.
