MIRI (June 28): The Total Defence (Hanruh) concept must be understood and embraced by every segment of Malaysian society, as safeguarding national security and sovereignty is not the sole responsibility of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) or enforcement agencies alone.
According to Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, the concept requires the involvement of the entire population through a ‘Whole of Government, Whole of Society’ (WoGoS) approach.
He said the approach must continue to be strengthened in view of Malaysia facing increasingly complex security challenges including cyber threats, the spread of false information, cross-border crime, smuggling, human trafficking, maritime threats and natural disasters.
“The strength of a nation does not depend solely on military assets or weaponry, but also on the unity of its people, political stability, economic resilience, the capability of national institutions and the preparedness of society.
“When the people are united, mutually respectful and work together regardless of race, religion or background, the nation becomes stronger and more difficult to destabilise,” he said when officiating the National Defence Strategic Plan (PSPN) programme at SK Kuala Baram 2 here yesterday.
The Senadin assemblyman said every citizen had a role in defending the nation, whether by demonstrating patriotism, fostering community unity, complying with the law, sharing accurate information or being prepared to assist when the country faces challenges.
He also stressed that the peace and stability enjoyed by Malaysians should never be taken for granted.
“Behind the peace we experience are the great sacrifices made by members of the ATM, PDRM and various security agencies that are always prepared to defend the nation’s sovereignty.”
On the PSPN programme, Lee hailed it as an ideal platform to strengthen ties between the Malaysian Army and the community through security education, humanitarian assistance, social services and other community-based activities while fostering patriotism.
“Closer cooperation between our security forces and the public can help build trust, enhance mutual understanding and expand strategic cooperation with local communities.
“I hope that such programmes would encourage more young people to understand the role of the ATM while instilling in them noble values such as discipline, leadership, courage, teamwork and responsibility to help produce quality future generations,” he added.
Also present were Commander of the 31st Malaysian Infantry Brigade Brigadier-General Azman Md Zain, Miri District Education officer Jumari Hashim, Deputy Commanding Officer of the 20th Battalion of Royal Malay Regiment (20 RAMD) Major Mohd Izzat Izzudin Ab Razak, and SK Kuala Baram 2 headmaster Mohammad Kindang.
