Naalakkersuisoq seeks foreign investment for Nukissiorfiit

Naalakkersuisoq seeks foreign investment for Nukissiorfiit

Naalakkersuisoq for environment, nature, energy and research, Jørgen Rosbach (D), estimates that Nukissiorfiit’s poor financial situation in recent years is due to the demand for the single price system in the country. He also says that the national treasury cannot afford to bring Nukissiorfiit’s finances into balance.

Naalakkersuisoq acknowledges that the money that Nukissiorfiit lacks cannot be found in the coffers.

Naalakkersuisoq for environment, nature, energy and research, Jørgen Rosbach (D), has now been interviewed by Sermitsiaq, although he has not received the questions in advance. Nukissiorfiit, for which he has political responsibility, had a deficit of DKK 32.7 million. And he is not satisfied with another deficit.

    – Of course, a deficit in itself is not something nice. On the other hand, it would have been gratifying if there had been a profit, says Naalakkersuisoq to Sermitsiaq.

Nukissiorfiit also had a deficit of DKK 86.2 million in 2023 and DKK 60.2 million in 2024. And in their annual report for 2025 they write that they expect another deficit of between DKK 25 and 50 million this year as well.

One price system is the reason

Naalakkersuisoq believes that the company’s financial problems are due to Nukissiorfiit’s customers paying the same price per unit. Naalakkersuisut decided a few years ago that the prices for Nukissiorfiit’s customers should be the same throughout the country. Naalakkersuisoq now assesses that it is damaging the company’s finances.

    – The prices may have been set too low, and this has therefore resulted in inadequate funds for maintenance. You can say that the economic collapse lies there, says Jørgen Rosbach.

It has previously been stated that, in addition to the annual losses, Nukissiorfiit also lacks DKK 1.8 billion for the maintenance of its fixed assets. It has also been decided that users will have to pay 7 percent more per year until 2028.

The National Treasury cannot afford it

It is now recognized that the company’s financial deficit cannot be balanced by the users alone. Therefore, it must now be investigated whether other countries can contribute billions of kroner.

    – We would rather use our initiatives and resources to apply for grants outside the country than to hit the population. The next thing I want to do is to meet with the new ministers in Denmark who have just taken office. There we will find out how we can find funds within the Commonwealth of Nations that we can use for maintenance or in other ways.

    – Not only that. Since we have cooperation with the EU through Denmark, I would rather try to find the money we are talking about that way. Of course, I hope it succeeds. We know that the Danes want to achieve better cooperation, says Naalakkersuisoq.

Can’t you find the money you’re looking for in the national treasury?

    – If the national treasury had inexhaustible funds, it would not be a problem. But as our situation is now, it is not realistic, he says.

    Answer to the criticism

Last week, Sermitsiaq wanted to interview the responsible naalakkersuisoq about Nukissiorfiit’s continued deficit. But from the ministry it was stated that Naalakkersuisoq does not have the opportunity to appear for an interview and would only answer in writing.

Naalakkersuisoq in harsh criticism from the opposition for not appearing for an interview

That approach has been criticized by the opposition parties, with both Jens Napãtôk’ (N) and Erik Jensen (S) speaking out for Sermitsiaq. According to opposition members, it is a violation of democracy that Naalakkersuisoq does not have the opportunity to be interviewed by the free press and only wants to answer in writing, and it also shows a lack of suitability for the post.

    Naalakkersuisoq responds to that criticism:

    – I have taken note of the opposition’s criticism. It is only natural that they express their views when they come up with such criticism, says Jørgen Rosbach.

He does not directly answer the question of whether the opposition’s criticism was the reason why he was given the opportunity to be interviewed.
