The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ response to videos circulating online showing 38-year-old Nichole McDonald being removed from the Matron Roberts Clinic in Belize City and restrained outside has drawn public attention.
The ministry issued a statement condemning violence against healthcare workers following the altercation. Reports indicate McDonald became violent after feeling a doctor was taking too long to attend to her. She had visited the clinic seeking treatment for an injury.
The now deleted statement from the ministry called on the public to show respect toward health personnel across all settings, stating it “reaffirms that health providers have the fundamental right to work in a safe and secure environment and must be allowed to perform their duties feeling safe and respected.”
“Threats, abusive language, intimidation, or physical aggression toward health personnel will not be tolerated,” the ministry added.
The statement was pulled shortly after some users pointed out it had been generated by artificial intelligence.
