The National Meteorological Service (NMS) has issued an Excessive Rainfall Warning. The NMS is forecasting an additional 2 to 4 inches over central areas of the country in the next 4 to 6 hours, on top of the 4 to 6 inches that have already fallen this morning.
Areas in Belmopan, including Las Flores, have been hit with flooding after heavy rainfall. The George Price Highway at Mount Pleasant has been “closed to small vehicles as a result of flooding caused by the incessant rains,” confirmed the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing confirmed the closure in an online statement.
MIDH says its teams are already on site “monitoring and will be working to address the situation.” It added that “motorists are asked to drive with excessive care in all areas affected by the rains.”
Residents in flood affected areas are being urged to stay off the roads where possible. Driving or walking through flooded streets carries real risk, with water levels in some spots unsafe to gauge from the surface.
An Excessive Rainfall Watch also remains in effect nationwide, with up to 2 to 4 inches possible over the next 12 to 18 hours, especially over southern areas. A Small Craft Caution has been issued too, warning of gusty winds and rough seas near heavy showers and thunderstorms, with operators of small crafts advised to “exercise caution.”
