Chief Minister of the AGU (Advocacy General of the Union), Jorge Messias admitted to allies that he is considering handing over the position after the rejection of your name to the STF (Federal Supreme Court). At the end of Wednesday night (29), still under the impact of the defeat in the plenary of the Senatehe expressed, in messages, his intention to leave the Esplanada.
Shaken by the defeat, the minister signaled this possibility to the president himself Lula (PT) during a meeting at Palácio do Alvorada. But, according to reports, Lula insisted on remaining in management, suggesting that he not make any hasty decisions.
Among Lula’s collaborators, fans are growing for Messias to take over the Ministry of Justice. This would be a demonstration of recognition of his work leading the AGU and a response to those who voted against his appointment in the STF.
In conversations, Messias said that a dream was destroyed by senators. He stated that although he did not ask for be nominatedpresented his name in a respectful manner. The minister also said that, despite this conduct, he faced a defamatory campaign for five months.
He also resents a lack of support from PT members, some of whom are supporters of other names for the court.
In these conversations, Messiah’s interlocutors suggested that he calmly reflect on his future. But they recognize that one of the obstacles to their remaining in the AGU would be the need to negotiate with authorities who articulated their defeat.
In the assessment of Messias’ allies, the STF ministers Alexandre de Moraes and Flavio Dino are among the opponents of his nomination, in addition to the president of the Senate, David Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), and the senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSB-MG).
Alcolumbre wanted Pacheco to have been nominated, stepped away from the government after Lula opted for Messiah and started working against the chosen President of the Republic. When seeking votes, Messias said in private conversations with senators that could not be penalized for a disagreement between Lula and Alcolumbre.
Senators reported having received direct requests from the President of the House to vote against the appointment of the Advocate General of the Union.
On Wednesday night, after the opening of the Senate panel showed the results of the vote, Messias told allies that he will go down in history as the only person rejected for the position in more than a hundred years.
Lula’s nominee needed at least 41 favorable votes in the Senate, an absolute majority, but only obtained 34. It was the first time that the Legislature blocked a nominee of the President of the Republic for the Supreme Court since 1894.
Soon after the defeat, the Lula government began to map the betrayals which culminated in the rejection of Messiah. The government estimate was that there would be around 45 votes in favor.
Thursday (30) was marked by uneasiness among allies and a general climate of distrust. The day before, during a meeting at the official residence of the Presidency shortly after the end of voting, members of the government identified votes against the vote. MDB and in PSDin a conspiracy led by Alcolumbre.
The following day, however, MDB leaders informed the Presidency that the party supported Messias’ choice and that the only dissent was probably that of Senator Ivete da Silveira (SC), deputy to the Bolsonaro governor. Jorginho Mello (PL).
Lula has the right to send a new name to the Supreme Court, which will also need to be deliberated by the Senate. Alcolumbre, however, promised the opposition that the nomination will go to whoever wins the presidential election and that he will not put another name presented by Lula to the vote before then.
The PT member currently appears tied in voting intention polls for second round with the senator Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ).
