Parliamentarian Edgar Sampi believes that the interior should embrace the Mennonites. We just make a lot barbaribecause it will soon become apparent that the controversial sect will simply be allowed to settle in Suriname. Sampi is firmly convinced of this, because he knows Surinamese politics.
If I were Ruud Soverein, I would have thrown a party after Sampi’s prediction. After all, the loot would then be in, after so many years of wrangling and wrangling around this group of believers. It is possible that Sampi had already whispered this to him, because the man appears to be very persistent. And continues making plans as if nothing has happened.

During his outpouring, Sampi made the remarkable statement that because a certain party – he was clearly referring to the NDP – is not involved in the arrival of the Mennonites, this party wants to thwart their arrival. But as far as we know, Sampi’s party is not involved in the arrival of the believers.
Would it be said that his party, even before the interior embraced the people, had already embraced them? That would explain Sovereign’s fighting spirit a little better. Otherwise I cannot understand why Sampi wants to turn the establishment into a political matter. His party wants development of the interior and the Mennonites would bring that.
Among the begrudgers is no one other than Aunt Jenny. She let slip that she wants the Mennonites out of the country. If necessary, on a plane she paid for herself. Aunt Jenny would too barbari have made? We’ll see.
In any case, Sampi would do well to take the lead in educating village communities about the Mennonites, as he would like. He can then explain to his audience how the development will come about.
I think out loud with him and already see that happening differently than in the rest of the world, people from the village communities as employees in the farms can walk around. Or even set up joint ventures in the hinterland. Or a kind of public agricultural schools, so that everyone in the hinterland can master intensive agricultural methods. All this as long as Sovereign does not attract the type of people who, as is known, live in closed communities with their own morals. And they can also live close enough to existing village communities.
What Sampi certainly does not have to worry about is the announcement from Braganza that approximately 350 families must initially come to Suriname. That is worth at least two village communities. In ten years’ time, given the size of families and their ‘drive to multiply’, this will increase.
Something tells me that Sampi probably thought about that too and must certainly have dreamed of the creation of Maroonites. Look, that could also boost tourism further!
