Trump receives King Charles III and Queen Camilla in the White House
Donald Trump and his wife met the British King Charles III. and Queen Camilla were welcomed to the White House on Monday afternoon. It was the start of a four-day state visit by the British royal couple to the United States. The four were only visible for a moment on the South Lawn of the White House; Afterwards, according to the American president’s daily program, a “tea and a beehive tour” was planned for the guests.
On Tuesday there should be another official welcome of the royal couple at the White House, followed by a bilateral meeting in the presence of the wives and another welcoming ceremony. A speech by Charles to the assembled Congress – the second by a British monarch after his mother’s in 1991 – and a dinner at the White House are also planned.
President Trump said last week that he was looking forward to the visit. Charles is a “friend of mine” and we will have a great time. Before the trip, Buckingham Palace said the king was in Washington to “celebrate with the American people the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.”
However, the relationship between Great Britain and the United States is tense these days. Trump accused British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of letting America down when he refused support in the Iran war. “When we needed them, they weren’t there.” The country is no longer the “Rolls-Royce of allies.”
