SARAMACCA — When his neighbors – 29-year-old RK and his brother DK – asked him to put out the fire, which he had lit on Wednesday to burn grass and dirt along Coppenameweg, 33-year-old MK refused to do so. The Suriname Police Corps (KPS) wrote on its website on Friday (today) that the Calcutta police, who had been called in, could not persuade the man to do so.
Instead, he left the place. Shortly afterwards, disaster struck mercilessly. “While the opposing party (RK and DK, … ed.) went to the police station for further processing, the fire spread to the wooden house where MK was staying. Shortly afterwards, the police received a report that the house was completely on fire. The fire spread quickly and the house burned down completely,” reports the KPS.
The fire then spread to the adjacent stone house of brothers RK and DK. Resolute action by local residents prevented this building from burning down completely. However, it did sustain significant scorch, fire and water damage. When the fire brigade arrived, they only carried out additional extinguishing work. Forensic Investigation was called in to conduct the technical investigation.
MK was subsequently tracked down and arrested in the immediate vicinity. The police suspected him of arson, assault, vandalism and unlawful occupation of a building. It is stated that when the brothers pointed out to their neighbor that the fire he had lit was causing a serious nuisance due to the smoke development, an altercation ensued, which resulted in a scuffle. MK was placed in custody after consultation with the Public Prosecution Service.
