The statement by Minja Koskela follows similar calls by the leaders of the opposition SDP and Green parties.
Left Alliance leader Minja Koskela has called on Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) and his government to resign.
“The most important measure of the government’s economic policy success is how Finnish people are doing,” Koskela wrote in a press release.
“When Finland’s situation is compared to its peer countries, the answer is clear: the situation is bad. Unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and inequality have all increased during this government term.”
Koskela’s call comes in the wake of similar demands made last week by Green Party leader Sofia Virta and SDP chair Antti Lindtman.
Government “past its best-before date”
Separately, the five main opposition parties in parliament have submitted an interpellation on the failure of the government’s economic policy. The submission will automatically lead to a debate in parliament and a vote of confidence in Orpo’s coalition.
“The government’s economic policy has been the most unsuccessful in Europe,” Lindtman said at Thursday morning’s press conference, adding that “Finland needs decision-makers who acknowledge the results and take responsibility”.
Centre Party chair Antti Kaikkonen meanwhile told reporters that the government is now “past its best-before date”.
“It’s not enough to blame international economic conditions. It’s true that they are difficult, but economic conditions affect other countries in Europe as well,” Kaikkonen said.
Public dissatisfaction with the government’s performance has gathered pace in recent months. A survey published by the Foundation for Municipal Development (KAKS) last week revealed that three-quarters of respondents believed the government has done a poor job on employment.
