The Albanese government has backflipped on keeping secret its memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nauru, which sets the ground rules for Australia’s controversial resettlement of members of the so-called NZYQ cohort.
The bulk of NZYQ are former Australian non-citizen detainees who had their visas cancelled on character grounds or were convicted of crimes, and who faced lifelong detention because they could not be resettled outside of Australia. The High Court ruled in 2023 their indefinite detention in immigration facilities was unlawful.
