Kalinago Chief Anette Sanford and Councilor Miranda are currently in St Kitts continuing important conversations around creating opportunities for the Kalinago people outside of Dominica according to a recently released statement.
According to the statement from the Kalinago Council, the visit has advanced a proposal for the establishment of a Kalinago Craft center in St Kitts, a space that would create economic opportunities for Kalinago People living in St Kitts.
“We proudly recognize the Government of St Kitts and Nevis as the first English speaking Caribbean Government to formally engage the Kalinago people in meaningful dialogue about creating opportunities for our people outside of Dominica,” the statemement said. “This is the kind of regional partnership we welcome, one that recognizes that our cultural heritage is a living resource that can create cultural, social and economic opportunities for present and future generations. We look forward to strengthening this partnership and continue to build bridges between our Kalinago communities across the Caribbean.”
As part of the visit the Kalinago delegation will also participate in a ceremony in remembrance of the St. Kitts Kalinago Chief Tegremond who was assassinated in 1626 by the efforts of Sir Thomas Warner father of Kalinago Chief Thomas Warner of Dominica (also known as ”Carib Warner” or ”Indian Warner”).
