The director of the post branch in Durrës, Elisabeta Mataj, has been dismissed, while it is known that she has been reported for criminal prosecution by the managers of the Albanian Post, after an inspection of the Durrës branch for abuses.
The notice for the control in the Durrës subsidiary was given by the Albanian Post itself, which stated that irregularities and violations were found in the administration of funds related to payment services and that, after that, it took immediate administrative measures against the responsible employees, as well as referred the case to the prosecutor’s office, filing a criminal complaint.
From reliable sources, Top Channel has learned that abuse of 3 million euros is suspected. When the treasury was reconciled at the end of the month, initially there were about 1 billion Lek shortfalls. Then, during the more in-depth analysis, it was evident that the value of absences was even greater.
Meanwhile, it is learned that the head of finance, Valbona Hoti Duni, resigned immediately.
The Albanian Poasta itself reacted with an official announcement stating “Posta Albanian sh.a. informs the public opinion that, within the framework of its internal control mechanisms and financial monitoring procedures, the General Directorate, through the Economic Directorate, based on inconsistencies found during the reconciliation of funds and financial reports, has exercised a check on the Durrës Branch.
From the verifications carried out, irregularities and violations in the administration of funds related to payment services have been identified. We emphasize that these funds have nothing to do with pension funds or pensioners’ payments.
Immediately after finding these irregularities, the Albanian Post took immediate administrative measures against the responsible employees, as well as referred the case to the Prosecutor’s Office, filing a criminal complaint accompanied by the relevant documentation.
The Albanian Post is cooperating fully with the law enforcement bodies, making available all the information and documentation necessary for the complete clarification of the circumstances of the case. The evaluation of individual responsibilities and the undertaking of further procedural steps belong to the competent bodies of justice.
This case proves the effective functioning of the internal control mechanisms of the Albanian Post, which enabled the identification of irregularities and their immediate referral by the institution itself to the competent bodies.
Albanian Post remains determined to implement a policy of zero tolerance towards any violation of the law, abuse of office or abuse of the institution’s funds. Integrity, transparency and protection of public interest remain non-negotiable priorities of the institution.”
Elisabeta Mataj was appointed head of the Durrës postal branch in October 2025, after the previous head, Etleva Budini, won the mandate of deputy in the elections of May 11, where she competed in open lists.
