And one person who is no longer getting a ministerial allowance is Jose Abelardo Mai. That’s because he is no longer a minister. Mai is the former agriculture minister. He is Ferguson’s predecessor, and so we asked Ferguson if he still leans on Mai for advice. Here is how he responded.

“I am the minister of agriculture, and I make sure to try my best to maintain control because the prime minister has given me that position for a period of time. And I want to make sure it looks very good. Agriculture is my passion, and it is an industry that can make the country look good. As a matter of fact, I just came back from the Caribbean Week of Agriculture two weeks ago, and they are depending on Belize to supply CARICOM once we can provide and have a shipping route and a good price.”

“Does he provide any sort of advice or perform any sort of advisory role?”

“Maybe to members of staff, I don’t know. But not to myself, because we don’t talk about what to do and what not to do in my ministry.”
