Efforts for peace have been futile, says Iran after repeated US attacks against the country.
The latest American attacks against Iran have rendered months of diplomatic efforts to bring about peace futile.
According to the AFP news agency, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote this in a statement on Monday night.
The statement comes shortly after the US launched nighttime strikes against Iran for the fourth time in a week.
– These barbaric attacks are not only a gross violation of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, but also a serious threat to international peace and security, writes the ministry.
The attacks have “rendered all the efforts that have been made to reduce tensions and create peace in the West Asian region useless”, the ministry writes further.
– The American regime has also caused uncertainty to return in the Strait of Hormuz and international shipping traffic to be disrupted by openly interfering with Iran’s implementation of the necessary measures, the ministry writes.
The latest wave of US strikes against Iran was launched at 11pm on Sunday night.
The American Central Command, Centcom, has justified the recent attacks with Iran’s behavior in the Strait of Hormuz.
Among other things, the justification has been several times that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) has attacked ships on the important trade route.
The Strait of Hormuz has been a central point of contention in the negotiations between the US and Iran.
On Sunday morning, the IRGC said it had closed the strait and that it will remain closed until what was described as US interference in the region stops.
Later in the day, the US military came up with a conflicting report that the strait was open to ship traffic.
On February 28, the United States, together with Israel, launched a war against Iran. Trump justified the war by saying he wanted to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
After several months of negotiations, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June, which should pave the way for an end to the conflict.
US President Donald Trump stated at a NATO summit on Wednesday that he no longer considers the memorandum of understanding to be valid. Later in the week, he wrote on Truth Social that the ceasefire is over.
Before that, the two countries had several times accused each other of breaking the ceasefire agreement.
