The President of the Republic, Yamandu Orsiled this Friday the official tribute to José Gervasio Artigas at the foot of the mausoleum located in Plaza Independencia, in Montevideo, within the framework of the 262nd anniversary of the birth of the hero.
The ceremony began around 11:00 and had as its central moment the placement of a floral offering in honor of the founder of the oriental nationality.
Orsi was accompanied by the Secretary of the Presidency, Alejandro Sanchez; the pro-secretary, Jorge Diaz; the director of the Office of Planning and Budget, Rodrigo Arim; and the Minister of National Defense, Sandra Lazo.
Cabinet presence
The ministers of the Environment also participated in the event, Edgardo Ortuño; of the Interior, Carlos Black; of Social Development, Gonzalo Civila; of Industry, Energy and Mining, Fernanda Cardona; and Labor and Social Security, Juan Castillo.
Also present were the Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning, Tamara Paseyro; the Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Lucia Etcheverry; the interim minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Matías Carámbula; the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Valeria Csukasi; and the Undersecretary of Public Health, Leonel Briozzo.
Military involvement
The ceremony included the participation of Blandengues Regiment and of Florida Battalionwhich were part of the protocol event held in the main square of the capital.
The tribute was held within the framework of the national holiday for the birth of Artigas, one of the national dates in the Uruguayan calendar.
The message of the National Army
On the occasion of the date, the National Army He published a publication in which he remembered the figure and legacy of the oriental hero.
The force highlighted that Artigas was the son of Martin Jose Artigas and Francisca Antonia Arnaland grandson of Juan Antonio Artigasone of the first settlers of Montevideo.
He also reviewed part of his military career, remembering that he entered the Montevideo Border Blandengue Corpswhere it provided surveillance and control services in the campaign.
According to the message, it was as a captain that he became one of the driving forces of the revolution that began with the Cry of Asencio and later stood out in the Battle of Las Piedrasconsidered one of the main military victories of the independence period.
The Army also recalled the Exodus of the Eastern People towards Ayuían episode that consolidated his leadership and made him the main eastern leader.
The publication also highlighted his role as “Protector of Free Peoples” and maintained that its influence transcended the borders of the Eastern Province to extend to the entire Federal League.
Finally, the institution stated that Artigas was “a man involved and committed to his time”whose ideas sought to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable sectors.
“Remembering his legacy on the day of his birth is our obligation as heirs of a history that transcends time”concluded the message released by the Army.
