Attorney H. R. Ian Roach has been appointed a member of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission (JLSC).
President Christine Carla Kangaloo administered the oath of office and presented Roach with his instrument of appointment during a ceremony at President’s House on Tuesday.
Roach is an attorney-at-law with Chancery Chambers and currently serves as chairman of the Equal Opportunity Commission.
According to the Office of the President, Roach has more than 30 years’ experience in public and labour law, with expertise in negotiation, mediation and lobbying. He has represented governments and organisations, including Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Law and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, as well as a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School.
Roach previously served as Trinidad and Tobago’s Honorary Consul to South Africa between 1999 and 2005 and was an adviser to the Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in 2006.
Between 2010 and 2023, he presided over several courts-martial as Judge Advocate for the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force.
He also served as an Independent Senator from 2013 to 2016, sitting on several parliamentary committees, including as chairman of the Joint Select Committee on Local Authorities, Service Commissions and Statutory Authorities, including the Tobago House of Assembly.
