Washington – US President Donald Trump’s representative Steve Wittkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are reportedly going to Switzerland for ceasefire talks. This is after the earlier scheduled talks were postponed. Another Trump representative and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is also expected to arrive in Switzerland to take part in the talks. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance canceled his trip to Switzerland on Thursday amid continued heavy-handed attacks in Lebanon between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. On Wednesday, Washington and Tehran signed an agreement to end the war that began on February 28.

Within hours of the US-Iran ceasefire coming into effect, an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon killed 20 people. The Iranian military has announced that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation. However, the US has stated that there is no evidence that shipping has been disrupted. The new developments raise concerns about ongoing ceasefire talks in Switzerland. Yesterday, 47 people were killed in Lebanon in an Israeli airstrike. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the continued attacks were a betrayal by the US and Israel and that Hormuz was closing.

At the same time, Israel’s stance is that it retaliated in response to the rocket attack by Iran-backed Hezbollah. The Israeli attack was on a 3-storey flat complex in Barish city. According to the ceasefire agreement, armed groups and allies must immediately cease military operations in the region, including Lebanon. But Israel, which was not involved in these talks, is opposed to restricting military movements in Lebanon. While committed to the cease-fire agreement, Hezbollah said it would resist any attempt by Israel to seize land or expand its occupation. Negotiations are ongoing to convert the US-Iran Temporary War Agreement into a permanent peace agreement.

    English Summary:

US Iran ceasefire talks are underway in Switzerland to de-escalate tensions following recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. The negotiations aim to solidify a temporary truce into a lasting peace agreement, despite ongoing provocations and Iran’s response of closing the Hormuz Strait.
