Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze held a telephone conversation with President of Nauru David Adeang. According to the government’s press office, during the call, Kobakhidze thanked the leader of Nauru for the decision to withdraw the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.
The leaders also discussed establishing diplomatic relations between Tbilisi and Yaren, as well as advancing bilateral cooperation across various fields.
On July 21, 2026, reports emerged that Nauru had severed diplomatic relations with the occupied Georgian regions. A day later, the Pacific island nation’s government officially announced the revocation of its recognition of their independence.
Following Russia’s recognition of the sovereignty of Sokhumi and Tskhinvali on August 26, 2008, only a handful of UN member states followed suit: Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, and Syria.
In 2013, Vanuatu and Georgia established diplomatic ties, after which the island nation recognized Georgia’s territorial integrity. A year later, Tuvaluan authorities made a similar decision.
Consequently, only four countries currently recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria in December 2024, Tbilisi saw an opportunity to pursue a reversal of the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia by the new Syrian leadership. The Georgian opposition addressed a corresponding appeal to Damascus. In addition, Lithuania officially urged the EU to engage with Syria’s new authorities to review the decisions made under Assad.
The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs directed a similar request to the new leadership of Venezuela immediately after the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, was apprehended by US forces. At the time, Tbilisi stated: “We express hope that recent developments will lead to a review of this illegal decision.”
