From the maternity ward to the funeral: Four tragic days in Ishtikhan

When 36-year-old Nasiba arrived at the hospital to give birth, no one imagined that news of her death would spread four days later. During this time, first the fetus died, then the mother’s condition worsened and she died. Relatives claim that the doctors were negligent in this process. Doctors deny these claims.

Kun.uz interviewed the participants of the event and tried to restore the chain of events from April 10 to April 14.

    When did the danger begin?

Nasiba Elmurodova, a resident of Ishtikhon district of Samarkand region, was brought to the district health department on April 10 around 2:00 p.m. to give birth to her fourth child. Ozoda Mikhlibayeva said that the doctors in the reception department asked the patient to undergo an ultrasound scan. After the examination results were submitted, the woman was left in the hospital.

Around 4:00 p.m., shifts change and Nasiba Elmurodova goes under the supervision of obstetrician-gynecologist Tolkin Eshtemirov. The family members said that at this time the doctor did not tell the relatives of the patient about any serious danger. On the contrary, it was reported that the woman could give birth naturally, so they returned home.

Ozoda Mikhliboyeva says that even after going home, she is in contact with Ovsini by phone. According to him, Nasiba said that he was not feeling well.

“Did the doctor see?” to the question, he answered “No”. When Ozoda urged him to go to the doctors, he said: “When I walk, the water is leaking.”

This was probably one of the last direct statements of the deceased in the chain of events.

It is at this point that the first question arises. If the patient begins to bleed, how dangerous is this condition? How was his condition monitored until the evening hours? So far, there are only instructions from the parties.

Around 21:00 there will be a call from the hospital to the family members. They are requested to come immediately. By this time, the condition of the fetus was said to have worsened.

Dyor Ergashev, the husband of the deceased, said that the doctor Tolkin Eshtemirov did not guarantee the result of the operation, the child’s heartbeat was not good, the woman was dehydrated and the child might be wrapped around the navel.

“The main thing for me was the survival of my wife and child. That’s why I decided to take him to another hospital,” he says.

Tolkin Eshtemirov has a different opinion. He said that an operation was offered earlier, but the patient said she wanted a natural birth. Later, when the situation worsened, relatives were called.

Thus, the most important conflict in the story is revealed. The family says the danger was not explained in time. The doctor says that the deceased himself was warned about the danger. Which of these two versions is closer to the truth should be determined by examination and medical records.

    Broken hope in a bucket

Dior Ergashev takes the woman to Chelak city hospital in Payarik district in a private car. The doctor on duty there, Islam Otamurodov, received the patient and checked the heartbeat of the fetus.

He said that first during a simple examination, and then through a doppler device, no heartbeat was heard. After that, the woman was sent for an ultrasound examination.

The result of the ultrasound in the bucket put an end to several hours of uncertainty. The fetus’s heart had stopped beating.

A few hours ago, there was still talk about whether to operate or not, but now this issue has lost its importance. The family was no longer concerned with saving the child, but began to try to understand why he died.

After that, Nasiba Elmurodova will be returned to Ishtikhan district on the night of April 11.

The doctors said that when it was clear that the fetus was dead, they preferred a natural birth instead of an operation. Dior Ergashev says that he has questions about this decision.

He said that when he asked the doctors how long he could walk with a dead fetus, no serious concern was expressed.

Another important aspect appears at this point. There is no official conclusion yet. However, one of the main topics of the investigation may be the extent to which the family’s reports of dehydration, fetal heart rate drop, and subsequent death and subsequent worsening of the mother’s condition are related.

On April 11, Diyor Ergashev said that when he came to the hospital, he saw that his wife was not well.

    “I’m cold,” said Nasiba.

According to her husband, the woman was shaking and her lips were cracked.

Ozoda Mikhlibayeva, who hunted the deceased, claims that the patient was not given enough attention during this period.

On April 12, around 06:00 in the morning, the baby was born dead.

The fight for mother’s life must (was) to begin.

Often in such cases, the focus is on the death of the baby. But in the case of Nasiba Elmurodova, the most important questions begin after that.

Because by this time the fetus had already died, the baby was stillborn, and now the main task was to save the mother’s life.

Dior Ergashev said that when he returned from burying the baby, his wife’s condition became worse than before.

“It was swollen. He was struggling to breathe,” he says.

He said that he brought the medicines requested by the doctors at his own expense.

Relatives of the deceased claim that the doctor Adolat Yormatova, who was on duty that day, also received money. According to them, 600,000 soums were taken from Diyar and 800,000 soums from his mother-in-law. The doctor denied the allegations.

But there is a more important question in this case than the money dispute: Was enough action taken after the death of the baby when the mother’s condition worsened? According to family members, no. Doctors reject this idea.

Nasiba Elmurodova will then be transferred to the intensive care unit, and then to the main intensive care unit. Dior Ergashev said that he hardly left the hospital from April 13 to April 14.

On April 14, Nasiba will be connected to a special device. His death was soon reported.

According to preliminary data, the cause of death was acute kidney and respiratory failure. However, this is not the final conclusion.

An expert opinion on this case was appointed today. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the situation. Perhaps the investigation will conclude that there was no violation. Maybe it will be the other way around.

Investigation and examination should determine who has what responsibility in this process. But no matter how long the investigation takes, this tragedy has already torn one family’s life in two. Today, three children were left without a mother in a house in Ishtikhan.

For information, this is not the only conflict that has arisen in recent months around the Ishtikhan district health department. Earlier, Kun.uz announced an inquiry about the death of two children after circumcision in this institution. did. In connection with this situation, a criminal case was initiated under Article 116 of the Criminal Code, and investigations are currently underway.

We look forward to a thorough investigation and comment on this situation from the responsible organizations.
