Two exhibitions at Fort Young Hotel and Secret Bay are inviting residents and visitors to explore Dominica’s environment, culture, and creative expression during the island’s Independence season.
At Fort Young Hotel’s Old Oven Art Gallery, the Waitukubuli Artist Association (WAA) presents ‘Waters We Become’, running from October 12, 2026, to January 4, 2027. Open daily, the exhibition features works inspired by the ocean, rivers and quiet streams, exploring the relationship between people, land and water.
The collection considers both water’s beauty and abundance and its destructive power following hurricanes, floods and landslides. It also examines how deforestation, pollution, overdevelopment and environmental neglect have affected the balance between land and water.
Beyond environmental concerns, the works reflect on the stories water carries, including migration, labour, celebration, grief, survival and renewal.
Meanwhile, Secret Bay’s Bwa Denn Art Gallery will host ‘Diversity’, a solo exhibition by Dominican artist JeanClaude Elias Nassief, from October 16, 2026, to January 31, 2027. The gallery is open daily.
The exhibition brings together paintings created by Nassief between 2020 and 2026, spanning different periods, locations, and artistic series. It celebrates the varied influences, styles and visual expressions that have shaped his work.
Nassief says the title reflects the different contexts in which the paintings were created. Visitors are encouraged to consider each piece individually and reflect on how diversity enriches artistic expression while fostering connection and belonging.
Together, the exhibitions offer an opportunity to experience Dominican art through perspectives on nature, identity and the experiences that connect people and communities.
