COPRA farmers in Bali-Vitu, West New Britain, are concerned about the decrease in copra prices.
The buying price had dropped from K3.50 to K3 while the cost of freight had increased from K35 to K40.
Tonny Vunga, a representative from Bali-Vitu, said the situation is creating frustration among communities.
“At a time when freight charges are increasing, the price of copra was falling,” he said.
“This is putting hardship on our people.”
The farmers were at the Kimbe Shipping Transport (KST) office last week after hearing of the price and cost changes.
They said that the rising freight costs were placing additional pressure on their earnings.
Copra is one of the main sources of income in Bali-Vitu, with most households in the area relying on it to support their daily needs and basic expenses.
With the increase in costs and decrease in revenue, farmers said their livelihoods are now being significantly affected, leaving many struggling to make ends meet.
Vunga called on the West New Britain government and the Talasea district administration to respond to the challenges faced by the people.
He said there were reports that the government had allocated subsidy funding to support small vessels operating along the Bali-Vitu route to reduce freight costs, but this has not been implemented.
“The government must find another way to help the people,” he said.
“This is a serious concern, and we need support during this difficult time.”
