The stage is set at the iconic Kensington Oval for a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final that promises a clash of contrasting narratives, as the resurgent Jamaica Kingsmen prepare to face the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons tomorrow at 6 p.m. Jamaica time.
For both franchises, history is within reach. Neither the Kingsmen nor the Falcons have ever lifted the CPL trophy, guaranteeing that a new champion will be crowned.
However, the paths taken by the two teams to the final could hardly have been more different.
The Falcons enter the contest as the tournament’s benchmark, having secured a top-two finish through consistent, high-quality cricket.
Captain Moeen Ali exuded calm confidence ahead of the showdown.
“I think, first of all, obviously we’re very happy to be in the final. And things have gone really well,” Ali said.
“We’ve just got better and better as the tournament’s gone on. Played quite consistently, and just obviously one more game to go.”
Despite their impressive run, Ali was quick to acknowledge the threat posed by a Jamaica side that has found its rhythm at the most critical stage of the tournament.
The Kingsmen scraped into the playoffs with only four group-stage victories, two of which came against the bottom-placed teams, but have since caught fire, dismantling the Barbados Tridents in the Eliminator before upsetting the Guyana Amazon Warriors in Qualifier Two.
“We felt like Jamaica was the most dangerous side, in my opinion,” Ali admitted. “I’ve been saying that even before they lost to Barbados. They got some match winners. Very good side. So we’re looking forward to a very good game and hopefully win. But it’ll hopefully be a great, entertaining game first of all.”
Carefully mapped-out plan
The sentiment was echoed by Kingsmen captain Rovman Powell, who reflected on his team’s “up-and-down” campaign.
Powell revealed that the team’s current position is the result of a carefully mapped-out plan.
“When we sat down as a group before the start of the competition, we outlined three goals. To see if we can get into the playoffs. And, once we get into the playoffs, our second goal is to push to the final. And the third goal is, when we get to the final, to see if we can cross the line.”
Powell acknowledged the challenge posed by Antigua and Barbuda, describing the Falcons as one of the competition’s strongest teams, but insisted his squad is peaking at the right time.
“Antigua is one of those teams that have played the best competition throughout the entire CPL, hence why they finished in the top two,” he said. “They have a lot of match winners. So it’s for us to come up with those little plans and see how best we can get over the line.”
The Kingsmen captain also expressed confidence in the balance of his squad, highlighting the combination of his batting and bowling units.
“When you look at our bowling, we have good bowlers. We have bowlers that are taking wickets, which is important, and as a batting group, I think we have capable match winners. And, when you have capable match winners, it’s just for you to create an environment for them to be successful.”
While both teams are expected to field unchanged line-ups, the Kingsmen are monitoring the fitness of star all-rounder Andre Russell.
Russell was forced to leave the field before completing his second over in the victory over the Amazon Warriors but later returned to claim a crucial wicket. His availability could prove vital to Jamaica’s hopes of capturing a maiden CPL title.
