The Electoral Commission has moved to clarify the amount political candidates are required to pay when registering to contest an election.
Commission Chairman Duncan Stowe said the mandatory deposit has been increased from EC$500 to EC$1,000 under the recently amended electoral legislation.
Stowe made the clarification during last Thursday’s press briefing after an inconsistency was identified on the Electoral Office’s candidate registration document.
The form had continued to list the former EC$500 charge, even though the revised law had already established the new EC$1,000 requirement. The outdated information raised the possibility of confusion among persons preparing to enter the electoral race.
According to Stowe, the Electoral Office will correct the error by producing updated registration forms that reflect the current statutory
fee.
He stressed that the EC$1,000 deposit is the amount established under the amended election laws and will apply to candidates registering under the revised requirements.
