Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) General Secretary Thomas Letang says the peaceful protest staged by doctors on Tuesday has yielded positive results.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Prime Minister’s Office on October 14, 2026, Letang welcomed the opportunity for doctors to meet directly with Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and outline their concerns.
He said such engagement was a positive development and expressed hope that the issues raised would receive timely attention.
Letang also welcomed the establishment of a committee to examine the challenges facing doctors and make recommendations for
addressing them.
He believes that implementing the recommendations promptly could prevent further protests in the near future. However, he stressed the need for a stronger working relationship between the Ministry of Health and the Dominica China Friendship Hospital (DCFH), noting that significant structural changes – particularly the hospital’s transition from the Ministry’s direct control to an independent authority – were likely to create administrative and operational challenges.
The DPSU General Secretary acknowledged that resolving these issues would take time, pointing out that approximately five years had passed since the change in the hospital’s management structure.
He maintained that closer cooperation between the Ministry of Health and the DCFH would help address outstanding concerns and improve the situation for doctors. Letang expressed optimism that, with timely action and better collaboration, the challenges could be resolved without further industrial action.
