The Nato summit has been “good”, and there is agreement at the summit that Nato is “stronger than ever”.
This is what Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) says at the NATO summit in Ankara.
He downplays the showdown with Trump over both defense spending and Greenland.
– Ever since Eisenhower, US presidents have pointed out that there was an imbalance between what the US and Europe pay for defence.
– All that has moved. It is a combination of Trump and his unconventional approach and then the war in Ukraine, says Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
He believes that the “noise” should be removed when looking at the outcome of the summit.
– What was said inside the room was something else. It was a USA that recognizes that Europe is about to deliver, that you have to take a larger part of the bill, says Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
He also believes that the working group between Denmark, Greenland and the USA will continue to be able to find solutions that can resolve the dispute over Greenland.
– I have taken note of the president’s statements about Greenland. It confirms what we have known all along, namely that if Trump decided everything, Greenland would be American tomorrow.
– But Greenland does not want to become American. And we have an agreement that the working group must find solutions to the legitimate security interests of the United States. We firmly believe that can happen, says Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
