Dominica State College (DSC) is giving students a hands-on role in tackling digital connectivity challenges through a new initiative focused on Internet governance, research and innovation.
The DSC Youth Internet Governance Lab is being established through the College’s Innovation Hub with support from a US$20,000 grant from the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), according to a DSC press release.
The student-led project will examine connectivity issues affecting the DSC campus, including Wi-Fi interference, areas with limited coverage and disruptions to wireless signals.
Students from several disciplines will take part in the initiative, bringing together expertise from Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Education and Law/Paralegal Studies.
Their research will include mapping connectivity across the campus and examining areas such as IPv6 readiness, routing security, accessibility and Internet governance.
The release said the project is designed to turn everyday technology problems on campus into practical learning experiences. Students will not only investigate the technical causes of connectivity issues but will also consider the policy, legal, and accessibility questions that influence how people access and use digital services.
The initiative will culminate in a DSC Youth Internet Governance Forum in 2027. At the forum, students will have an opportunity to present their research findings and recommendations for improving connectivity resilience in small-island environments.
Another planned outcome is an open Small Island Campus Connectivity and Youth Internet Governance Toolkit. The resource could potentially be adapted for use by other colleges across the ARIN Caribbean region.
Through the project, DSC said it is positioning students as active participants in research and digital problem-solving, with the aim of helping them develop the knowledge and technical skills needed to understand, use and contribute to the future development of the Internet.
Dominica State College said the initiative reflects its focus on “empowering students through innovation, knowledge and opportunity.”
