The Dominica Council on Ageing (DCOA) is calling for justice following the death of 83-year-old Kenneth Charles of Canefield, whose body was discovered in a manhole along the Canefield highway on June 27.
In a written statement, the Council expressed sadness over Charles’ death, describing it as a brutal act. The organization also acknowledged the recent discovery of another deceased individual in Castle Bruce after the person had reportedly been missing for some time.
The DCOA extended condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of both deceased individuals.
The Council urged that those responsible for the death of Kenneth Charles be brought to justice and called on members of the public to remain vigilant and look out for older and other vulnerable members of society.
“We further call on all of us to be caring, vigilant and concerned about such incidences and look out for those who are vulnerable,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, thirty-two-year-old Aljai Liverpool was charged and taken into custody for the murder of Charles on July 2 and is currently on remand at the Dominica State Prison.
The organization also emphasized the important role senior citizens have played in building the nation and encouraged continued support for the elderly.
“Our seniors have paved the way for us as far as possible, we are to assist and empower them to live life to the fullest. They are our treasure and gems. Let us protect them at all times. May they rest in peace.”
The Council said it hopes the incident serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of older persons throughout Dominica.
