The name Tomora might not mean much yet, but it could soon become a fixture. Tomora is a combination of the first name of Tom Rowlands – one half of the Chemical Brothers and a legend of British electronic music – and that of Norwegian singer Aurora, a mystical figure in modern pop. Together, they are releasing their striking debut album, Come Closer, on Friday, April 17, a precious fusion of his exuberant electronic sounds and her ethereal aura.
“Fun” is the word they use the most during our video call on March 30. And it is easy to imagine the joy they found in creating these 12 tracks, given their evident chemistry on screen. “I love to be surprised in the studio and Aurora, she can be quite surprising,” laughed Rowlands from his living room in London, as his partner feigned surprise on the other side of the computer. “It’s very important to us that it feels very human and very in the moment. And like we put our laughter in the music. We put our dancing in the music. We put everything we talked about and we ate that day in the music,” she exclaimed, connecting from Norway.
