Students of Palmiste Government Primary School are set to benefit from approximately $90,000 worth of educational materials donated by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.
The donation comes as the school continues to operate from two temporary locations following a fire in December 2023 that destroyed its original compound.
On Thursday, purchase orders for the materials were formally handed over to Principal Sarrah Mohammed at the Embassy on Long Circular Road, Port of Spain. Currently, Infants to Standard 2 are housed at the Edinburgh 500 Community Centre, while Standards 3 to 5 attend classes at Longdenville Government Primary School.
Mohammed said the Embassy’s support would provide much‑needed relief for students and teachers at both facilities. She expressed hope that the partnership could extend beyond this donation, including the introduction of Mandarin classes.
“Many of our students have excelled in the Hindi language programme,” she said. “Learning Mandarin would give them an additional skill that could benefit them academically and professionally later in life.”
She noted that Mandarin is spoken by more than one billion people worldwide, including hundreds of millions outside mainland China.
“China is an economic powerhouse and we as a country have done billions in trade with China. Learning Mandarin would put our students at an advantage when they leave the primary school system, and through language we can foster greater cross‑cultural understanding,” Mohammed said.
She added that introducing Mandarin at the primary level would expose children to Chinese culture while strengthening ties between Trinidad and Tobago and China.
The school community remains hopeful that Palmiste Government Primary will eventually be rebuilt, allowing students and teachers to return to a permanent home.
“The desire of the community is to have the school rebuilt in the future,” Mohammed said.
The donation reflects the longstanding educational, cultural, and economic ties between Trinidad and Tobago and China, with Chinese assistance supporting several development initiatives locally over the years.
