Bhutan and Vietnam Poised for Expanded Cooperation – Business Bhutan

    in Bhutan

At the invitation of President Luong Cuong and his spouse, His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen will pay a State visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam from August 18 to 22, 2025.

The announcement was made by the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang during the ministry’s regular press briefing on August 14, 2025 in Hanoi. This marks the first-ever State visit to Vietnam by the Bhutanese Monarch since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2012—an important milestone in bilateral ties.

The visit takes place as Vietnam–Bhutan relations continue to record positive developments. Politically, the two sides maintain regular exchanges of delegations at various levels. In economic and trade cooperation, both countries have made efforts to boost two-way trade in recent years. Vietnam’s main exports to Bhutan include wood, machinery, equipment, tools, spare parts and other goods.

Bhutan exports agricultural products like cardamom, oranges, and dairy products to Vietnam. Additionally, Bhutan has been strategically expanding its export portfolio to include processed goods like potato chips, instant noodles, mushrooms, and apples. While Bhutan’s exports to Vietnam are smaller in volume compared to other trading partners like India, they represent a move towards diversifying both markets and the types of products exported.

“The two countries also maintain close coordination and mutual support, while stepping up cooperation at regional and international forums, particularly the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as well as on regional and global issues of shared concern.”

During the media briefing, the spokesperson also shared that agriculture, tourism, culture, education, science and technology, digital transformation and green development are among the sectors with significant potential for cooperation, and will be on the agenda during His Majesty’s meetings and talks in Vietnam.

According to Viet Nam News, the country’s National English Language Daily, apart from President Luong Cuong, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is scheduled to hold talks and have meetings with Party General Secretary Tô Lâm, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chính, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man. His Majesty will also take part in a number of other important activities.

Vietnam, a vibrant Southeast Asian nation, is renowned for its scenic coastlines, winding rivers, ancient Buddhist pagodas, and bustling urban centers. The country seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, offering visitors both natural beauty and cultural depth.

The capital city, Hanoi, is celebrated for its centuries-old architecture, tree-lined boulevards, and its solemn tribute to revolutionary leader Ho Chí Minh. In the south, Ho Chí Minh City—formerly Saigon—stands as a dynamic economic hub.

It is a One-Party State with an approximate population of 101 million as of 2024. One Vietnamese currency-Dong (VND)-is equivalent to 0.0033 Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN).

Today, Vietnam is recognized not only for its rich cultural heritage but also for its rapidly growing economy, strategic regional influence, and active role in global diplomacy.

Diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Vietnam were established on 19 January 2012. Vietnam’s Ambassador in New Delhi, India, is accredited to Bhutan and currently H.E. Nguyen Thanh Hai is the Ambassador of Vietnam to Bhutan.
