One of the most prominent banking executives in Algeria with professional experience exceeding 37 years

On the morning of Saturday, July 18, 2026, the Minister of Finance, Abdelkarim Bouzard, supervised the installation ceremony of Mustafa Ben Algama as Director General of the National Bank of Algeria, during a ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Finance, in the presence of members of the bank’s board of directors and executives from the sector.
This appointment comes within the framework of strengthening the process of modernizing the banking sector and benefiting from national expertise that has accumulated long experience in the field of banking management and finance, in line with the reforms taking place in the financial sector.
Mustafa Ben Alqma is considered one of the most prominent banking executives in Algeria, as he has more than 37 years of professional experience that he spent at the Algerian Popular Credit, during which he held a number of leadership positions related to financing institutions, risk analysis, and evaluating investment projects.
Ben Alqma held the position of Assistant General Manager at the Algerian Popular Credit from May 2010 until his appointment as General Manager of the National Bank of Algeria. He also previously held the position of Central Director between February 2001 and May 2010, where he supervised teams specialized in analyzing and managing loan risks and financing institutions.
Before that, he served as head of a central department between July 1997 and February 2001, and was in charge of studying and analyzing loan applications for institutions. He also held the position of head of the evaluation sector from February 1991 to July 1997, where he supervised the evaluation of investment projects. He began his professional career in 1989 with the position of chief in charge of studies at the central level.
On the academic level, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in economic sciences, specializing in finance, from the University of Algiers in 1986. Then he obtained a postgraduate diploma in banking and finance from the International Institute of Finance in Tunisia during the period between 1987 and 1989, before consolidating his training with a specialized diploma in banks and institutions from the training center of the French Development Agency in the French city of Marseille during the period 2000-2001.
It is expected that the new Director General of the National Bank of Algeria will lead a new phase in the development of the banking institution, especially in the areas of digitization, modernization of services, Islamic banking, enhancing investment financing, and keeping pace with the economic and financial reforms that the country is experiencing.
