Over the next two years, it will be possible to apply for compensation for having received contraception in Greenland or in Denmark without consent before 1992. A travel team will visit women in Greenland to guide them on how to apply.
Today there is opened for the long-awaited Danish compensation for the Greenlandic women who had IUDs without consent before 1992.
The financial compensation is DKK 300,000 per woman entitled to compensation.
The application is open until 1 September 2028, and you can apply in Danish or Greenlandic.
There are three criteria you must meet in order to receive compensation.

You must have lived in Greenland at some point in the period up to and including 1991.
-
You must declare to the best of your recollection that you received contraception in Greenland or Denmark without consent in the period 1960-1991.
-
You must be able to make the contraceptive event probable by describing it in the application form.
Contraceptives can be IUD, P-rod or Depo-Provera.

Go into Patient reimbursement website and read more about how you can apply.
Travel teams must guide the women
The patient compensation will actively guide the women who may be covered by the reimbursement scheme. This is done by a travel team that will carry out outreach and advisory work in Greenland.
The travel team consists of four people: a specialist consultant from Patient Reimbursement who is a trained lawyer and a nurse. She previously worked as a nurse in Greenland. A Greenlandic psychologist specializing in Greenlandic culture. An interpreter who can translate between Danish and Greenlandic, and a retired judge.
The first round trip will take place from 28 September to 22 October 2026. Here, Patienterstatningen’s travel team will visit towns and villages north and south of Disko Bay.
Presentations will be held on the compensation scheme in Ilulissat, Uummannaq, Aasiaat, Qeqertarsuaq, Qasigiannguit, Maniitsoq and Nuuk.
In the spring of 2027, Patienterstatningen is planning two further tours in East Greenland and West and South Greenland, respectively.
Although applications for compensation are now open, compensation will only be paid once the law has come into force. The bill has been urgently tabled in the Danish Parliament and is expected to enter into force on 1 September 2026.
