Searchlight newspaper in St Vincent and the Grenadines is set to cease publication next month, becoming the latest established Caribbean news outlet to halt operations amid mounting financial and structural pressures on the regional media industry.
After 31 years of continuous publication, the newspaper will publish its final print edition and pause its digital editions on September 25, as parent company Interactive Media Limited reviews the future direction of the operation.
The announcement comes during a particularly difficult period for Caribbean media, following the closure of Trinidad and Tobago’s Newsday and Guyana’s Stabroek News earlier this year, and regional digital news platform Loop News in 2025.
Searchlight, which began publication in 1995, said its decision came against the backdrop of significant changes in the global media industry, including declining print circulation and advertising revenue, rising operating costs and the continued movement of audiences and advertisers towards digital platforms.
The newspaper has provided coverage of St Vincent and the Grenadines for more than three decades, serving Vincentians at home and abroad.
Its impending shutdown adds to concerns about the sustainability of professional journalism across the Caribbean.
In January, Trinidad and Tobago’s Newsday began winding up operations after 32 years. Managing Director Grant Taylor said the company had been hit by what he described as a “perfect storm of challenges”, including continuing financial losses and pressure on the wider newspaper industry. Its final edition was published at the end of January.
Two months later, Guyana’s Stabroek News ended publication after more than 39 years as an independent newspaper.
Its parent company, Guyana Publications Inc, pointed to the impact of global digital platforms and the collapse in print advertising as it announced voluntary liquidation. The newspaper published its final editions on March 14 and 15.
The two closures prompted wider concern about the implications for independent journalism and media diversity in the Caribbean. Media practitioners told the Associated Press earlier this year that changing consumption habits, falling advertising revenue and competition from social media platforms were threatening the viability of traditional news organisations.
The pressures have not been confined to newspapers.
In July 2025, regional digital platform Loop News ceased operations after 11 years. Its owner, Digicel Group, announced that it was moving away from consumer-facing content to concentrate on its enterprise business.
The loss of Loop was particularly notable because the platform had been built as a digital news operation, highlighting that migration online alone has not guaranteed sustainability for Caribbean media.
Earlier this year, Media Institute of the Caribbean vice-president Wesley Gibbings warned that the region was in a “watershed period” as advertising shifted towards global technology platforms.
Searchlight has not indicated whether its September shutdown will be permanent. Its digital editions are being paused, rather than formally terminated, while Interactive Media Limited reviews the future of the media operation.
Its final print edition is scheduled for September 25.
