The new magistrate of the Constitutional Court (CC) took office early this Tuesday, April 14, amid legal actions related to the election process of one of its members, the high court reported on its social networks.
The integration of the CC for the period 2026-2031 was confirmed in a statement released during the early hours of the morning on official social networks.
According to official information, Gladys Annabella Morfín Mansilla, Astrid Jeannette Lemus Rodríguez, Roberto Molina Barreto, Dina Josefina Ochoa Escribá and Julia Marisol Rivera Aguilar took over as magistrates.
María Magdalena Jocholá Tujal, Luis Fernando Bermejo Quiñónez, Luis Alfonso Rosales Marroquín, Claudia Elizabeth Paniagua Pérez and José Luis Aguirre Pumay also took office as substitute magistrates.
The takeover occurs in a context of judicial tension. Sources from the justice sector warned last Monday about the MP’s efforts to request an arrest warrant against Judge Astrid Jeannette Lemus Rodríguez.
The lawyer was elected as a regular magistrate in the recent elections of the College of Lawyers and Notaries of Guatemala (Cang), a process that is under investigation by the MP.
During that election day, voting centers in Guatemala City were raided in the framework of a confidential case, related to the ongoing investigations.
According to a judicial source, the file is assigned to the Sixth Criminal Court, a court that did not resolve favorably the MP’s requests. The source asked not to be identified for security reasons.
In its statement, the CC indicated that it will exercise its functions in accordance with the Political Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala and will guarantee constitutional supremacy and the protection of fundamental rights.
