After three years, the political starting gun has been fired – but now the battle for funding in the upcoming budgets awaits.
It is now almost three years agothat the first citizens shared their visions for ‘Our Nuup Saava’. Now the municipal council has approved a comprehensive plan for the development of the area, known to many as Kolonihavnen and Nuutoqaq.
Mayor Avaaraq Olsen (IA) and the partners in the municipal council will develop the stretch from Holms Hus to Spækhusnæs. The goal is to create a lively and safe urban space all year round – exactly as the citizens called for in the large participation rounds in 2023 and most recently in the dialogue about Nuuk 2035.
From civic dreams to reality
Where the citizens during the idea competition in 2023 called for stronger protection of the district’s soul, the municipality is now responding again by making the re-establishment of the arctic garden at Holm’s Hus a landmark event.
The plan initially results in three noticeable measures:
- Reestablishment of the historic arctic garden at Holm’s Hus.
- A continuous light path out to Spækhuspladsen to increase safety in the dark months.
- Dialogue on transforming municipal buildings into creative workshops and cultural meeting points.
Next step: The money must be found
Although the administrative framework is now in place, the last important step is missing: the financing. The overall development, which also includes small trade stalls and green elements, must now be negotiated into place in the coming years’ budgets.
Thus, the start has been made to turn Nuup Saava into the cultural heart that the local citizens drew sketches of three years ago.
