The Attorney General’s Office reported on the night of this Thursday, April 9, that it began a criminal investigation, after allegedly officials of the Comptroller General of the Republic interrupted an interview procedure with auditors, in the case that is being followed against the former vice president of the Republic, Jose Gabriel Carrizo.
In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office highlights that the complaint was presented by a senior Anti-Corruption prosecutor, who reported “about officials of the Comptroller General of the Republic who break into in the middle of an investigation that involved auditors from said institution, thereby preventing its completion.”
Likewise, the statement explains that “The aforementioned auditors, upon being requested by the competent authority, were giving an interview within a case that is being pursued in said office for the crime of unjustified enrichment, against a former vice president of the Republic.”
It is not specified what level the Comptroller’s Office officials are who would have broken into the office of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
On January 28, a guarantee judge charged charges and ordered Carrizo’s house arrest for committing the alleged crime of unjustified enrichment.
As part of its investigation, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office maintains that the former vice president obtained income in the amount of $7.1 million during his administration (2019-2024). However, after completing his term, the declared assets exceeded $9 million, which results in an unjustified difference of $1.9 million.
The prosecution’s claims are based on an audit report from the Comptroller General of the Republic. which reveals the alleged increase in assets of the former vice president.
