Sermersooq Circuit Court will finish hearing all the witnesses and see a whole lot of documentation in the Block 5 case on Wednesday afternoon. A good time to summarize what we now know.
We know that on the morning of October 4, 2024, a 20-year-old man was found dead in a storage room in Blok 5 in Nuuk.
He was hit many times, probably with a stone. It probably took place in the storage room next door, where there were traces of blood on mattresses and blood spatter.
The 42-year-old man, who is accused in the case, has apparently used this other room to sleep at times. Prosecutors state that his fingerprints were found deposited in the victim’s blood and his DNA at the crime scene.
But the 42-year-old man denies having killed the young man, and the technical examinations do not link him to the suspected crime weapon either. The defendant has chosen not to answer questions in court.
Both the murdered man and the accused man were socially disadvantaged in Nuuk, but it is still uncertain to what extent they knew each other.
It has also emerged that the police had a number of other people in the spotlight before they proceeded to arrest the now 42-year-old man on 12 October 2024. One of them is still charged in the case, but not charged. This man is therefore not participating in the current trial either.
Violence case still maintained
The 42-year-old defendant was also charged with assaulting a woman in July 2024. But both witnesses in that relationship were unable to tell us anything about the incident.
However, prosecutors have not dropped the charges. On Wednesday afternoon, she presented photos of the woman after she had been slapped or similar. On this point, too, the defendant denies guilt.
We have also been told that the accused man has previously committed a murder. This has not yet been elaborated.
The case continues on Monday with a number of interesting items on the agenda. The defendant did not want to say anything in court, but has spoken in previous hearings. The magistrate’s court must consider whether the material may be used. There will possibly be several positions on this.
We also need to hear about why the prosecution wants the man sentenced to be placed in a psychiatric hospital in Denmark. Incidentally, he has also been here before these days in the circuit court.
In the end, we will see what the Magistrate’s Court says about it all, either on Monday or Tuesday next week.
