The famous Astronomical Clock on Prague’s Old Town Square will undergo routine maintenance from mid-May. As part of the work, a total of eight figures of the historic Orloj are to be restored. Visitors should expect occasional short technical interruptions.
Regular maintenance of Prague’s Orloj will begin on Monday, 11 May 2026. The work includes the restoration of movable and fixed figures that have been exposed to weather conditions and mechanical strain for years. The historic elements are therefore regularly inspected and professionally restored.
In the first phase, four figures from the lower row will be removed and transported to restoration workshops. There, they will undergo cleaning, restoration and technical inspection. After their return to Old Town Square, a second phase involving four additional figures will follow. The final restored sculptures are expected to return in October.
“The Old Town Hall with the Orloj is among Prague’s most important symbols. Regular maintenance is essential in order to preserve both the technical functionality and the historical value of this extraordinary monument for future generations,” said Prague Councillor for Culture and Tourism Tomáš Slabihoudek.
The removal of the first figures will begin on 11 May at 7 a.m. During the work, the Orloj will be temporarily switched off. Three shorter interruptions of a few hours each are planned so that the figures can be safely removed and the control systems checked.
Access across Old Town Square will remain open throughout the works. According to the city, only minor restrictions are expected in the immediate vicinity of the clock. The cost of the restoration, including transport and installation, amounts to around 400,000 crowns.
