A brazen daylight shooting has shaken the Northern Highway this afternoon. Gunfire rang out near the Haulover Bridge, targeting a moving vehicle carrying Hubert Baptist and Eric Fraser, sending it flipping into a roadside drain. Both men are now hospitalized as investigators work to piece together the attack. News Five’s Zenida Lanza has the story.

What unfolded near the Haulover Bridge this afternoon was a crime scene and a crash. Just after three, Hubert Baptist was pulled from a vehicle that had flipped into a roadside drain, mere feet away from where more than a dozen bullet shells littered the highway. The wreckage and scattered evidence now point investigators toward a violent sequence of events still being pieced together.
On the red SUV, bullet holes are visible through the windshield and driver’s side door. The targets were Baptist and another Eric Fraser, known gang members whose names have appeared in News Five’s coverage more than once over the years. As recently as 2025, Hubert sat down with News Five to speak about being wrongfully detained during the 2020 state of emergency, part of a group of sixteen men later set to receive compensation. His words reflected the frustration of a man who felt the system had failed him.
In March 2022, a raid on the Baptist family home left both Hubert and his brother Earl shot with non-lethal rounds, leaving them bloodied and in need of medical attention. Today the streets caught up with Baptist in a very different way. Reports indicate that an SUV pulled alongside their vehicle on the Northern Highway and a gunman leaned out and opened fire. Both Baptist and Fraser were rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they are currently being treated for their injuries. Police are investigating. Zenida Lanza for News Five.
