Jamaica’s Nation & T&T’s Wales called up for historic 2026 World Cup

MI­A­MI, USA – The Caribbean will have a pow­er­ful pres­ence on the pitch this sum­mer, as two of the re­gion’s finest of­fi­cials have been se­lect­ed to work the 2026 FI­FA World Cup.

Ja­maica’s Os­hane Na­tion and Trinidad and To­ba­go’s Caleb Wales have both been named to the record-break­ing “FI­FA Team One” for the world’s biggest foot­ball spec­ta­cle.

Wales, who will serve as an as­sis­tant ref­er­ee, joins Na­tion, a cen­tre ref­er­ee with an im­pres­sive ré­sumé that in­cludes the CON­CA­CAF Gold Cup and the FI­FA U-20 World Cup. The duo will fly the Caribbean flag high when the tour­na­ment kicks off across North Amer­i­ca.

Their se­lec­tions are part of a land­mark an­nounce­ment by FI­FA on Thurs­day. For the first time, the World Cup will fea­ture a stag­ger­ing 170 match of­fi­cials, com­pris­ing 52 ref­er­ees, 88 as­sis­tant ref­er­ees, and 30 video match of­fi­cials (VMOs).

This elite group hails from all six con­fed­er­a­tions and 50 Mem­ber As­so­ci­a­tions, mak­ing it the most com­pre­hen­sive line-up of of­fi­cials in FI­FA World Cup his­to­ry.

Ac­cord­ing to FI­FA, the ap­point­ments were made us­ing the gov­ern­ing body’s long-stand­ing “qual­i­ty first” prin­ci­ple. Key con­sid­er­a­tions in­clud­ed the con­sis­ten­cy of per­for­mances at re­cent FI­FA tour­na­ments, as well as in­ter­na­tion­al and do­mes­tic com­pe­ti­tions.

Pier­lui­gi Col­li­na, FI­FA’s Chief Ref­er­ee­ing Of­fi­cer and chair­man of the FI­FA Ref­er­ees Com­mit­tee, hailed the cho­sen group as the ab­solute best in the game.

“The se­lect­ed match of­fi­cials are the very best in the world,” Col­li­na said. “They were part of a wider pool of of­fi­cials that was iden­ti­fied and mon­i­tored over the past three years. They have at­tend­ed sem­i­nars and of­fi­ci­at­ed at FI­FA tour­na­ments. In ad­di­tion, their per­for­mances in do­mes­tic and in­ter­na­tion­al match­es were reg­u­lar­ly as­sessed.”

Col­li­na al­so em­pha­sised the un­prece­dent­ed sup­port sys­tem await­ing the of­fi­cials. “The se­lect­ed of­fi­cials have re­ceived, and will con­tin­ue to re­ceive, com­pre­hen­sive sup­port from our fit­ness coach­es and med­ical staff, in­clud­ing phys­io­ther­a­pists and a men­tal health spe­cial­ist. Our goal is to en­sure that they’re in op­ti­mal phys­i­cal and men­tal con­di­tion when they ar­rive in Mi­a­mi on 31 May.”

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in his­to­ry, fea­tur­ing a 48-team line-up and 104 match­es across an ex­pan­sive North Amer­i­can foot­print. That in­crease means a mas­sive boost in per­son­nel.

“This year’s FI­FA World Cup will be the biggest in his­to­ry. It’ll be the largest FI­FA Team One ever, with 41 more match of­fi­cials than at Qatar 2022,” Col­li­na added.
