The heavy rainfall recorded in recent days has generated significant damage in the northern area of the state of Táchira, which has left around 30 isolated families, four affected municipalities and the obstruction of the main access roads in several productive sectors.
According to Yesnardo Canal, regional director of Civil Protection Táchira, the most impacted municipalities are San Judas Tadeo, Panamericano, García de Hevia and Junín.
In San Judas Tadeo, the rains caused an increase in the flow of water tributaries, which generated the dragging of granular material and sediments. This obstructed an improvised pedestrian crossing (consolidated two years ago after the collapse of the original structure a decade ago) in the Veredales (or Veradales) and Mata de Guineo (Mata Guineo) sectors.
Through a statement on Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), Canal detailed that these obstructions have left around thirty families in Mata de Guineo incommunicado, especially affecting local producers who depend on these road accesses.
«Civil Protection immediately activated response teams and carried out a Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (EDAN), even using drone technology to assess the situation and determine care priorities. The sediment has obstructed a provisional passage that connected local producers, which led to the immediate activation of operations teams,” Canal explained.
So far, no state of emergency has been declared in the Andean entity, but “all local response capacity” is maintained coordinated to serve the affected communities, the official added.
In addition, early warning systems have been reinforced in nearby municipalities, with constant monitoring of water channels and soil saturation levels. In other parts of the northern zone, flooding of agricultural plains and some flooded homes in the Panamericano municipality were reported, as well as erosion of the asphalt on road T001 (Calichito sector), although in the latter case it was possible to maintain vehicular traffic.
The regional press highlights that the authorities recommended that the population stay informed through official channels and avoid traveling through risk areas while the rainfall continues. It is expected that in the next few hours work will continue to restore connectivity in the most affected sectors.
