POLICE are continuing their search for two suspects who remain at large following Saturday’s deadly confrontation in Central Trinidad, even as two others linked to the incident remain in custody.
Law enforcement sources confirmed yesterday that one of the arrested men is being held at the Caroni Police Station, while the second suspect, who was shot and wounded during the exchange of gunfire with officers, remains under police guard at hospital.
Investigators say the search for the remaining suspects is ongoing, with coordinated operations continuing across parts of Central Trinidad.
Senior officers indicated that the two men currently detained are being held within the initial 48-hour period permitted under law.
Once that period expires, police are expected to seek authorisation from a senior officer above the rank of ASP to extend their detention for up to seven days.
Beyond that, authorities are also considering the use of emergency powers through a preventative detention order (PDO), which would allow the suspects to be held for the duration of the ongoing state of emergency (SoE), sources told the Express.
The developments come in the wake of Saturday’s early-morning home invasion in Cunupia, which triggered a swift police and military response and resulted in four suspects being shot dead. Two others were arrested during the operation, while two escaped.
Police have maintained a heightened presence in the affected communities, as investigators continue to pursue leads aimed at apprehending the remaining suspects and dismantling what they believe to be an organised group involved in a series of recent home invasions across central Trinidad.
Authorities are urging members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity as the operation continues. —RR
