After a short wait is the Sermersooq District Court now ready with the verdict in the case against former facility manager Gerth Platou Jakobsen, which took place over three court days in February.
The circuit court finds Gerth Platou Jakobsen guilty of all four counts in the indictment, including fraud and abuse of authority committed during employment at Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq.
This is according to special prosecutor Henrik Uhl Pedersen from the prosecution at Copenhagen Vestegns Police, who handled the case in the district court.
The outcome was that Gerth Platou Jakobsen received a conditional sentence to be placed in prison for six months. Here, the court took into account, among other things, that the case had been in progress for a very long time, as it concerns matters from 2019 to 2022.
Abuse of his position
The court finds it proven that Jakobsen illegally influenced a municipal tender for cleaning services, which thus benefited a company owned by family members. Clear corruption, the prosecutor called it in the circuit court.
Gerth Platou Jakobsen is also known to be guilty of getting the municipality to pay for travel for himself and his family, which had nothing to do with the municipality. There was also the use of a municipal payment card for private purposes.
Jakobsen has pleaded not guilty to the whole thing.
It has not been possible to get a comment from the convicted person himself, nor do we yet know whether he intends to appeal the case to the Greenland High Court. He can consider this for up to 14 days.
Sermitsiaq usually does not bring names of convicts. We do so in this case because we are talking about a person who has been found guilty of abusing a position of power and responsibility.
Update: Gerth Platou Jakobsen’s first name appeared as Gert in the first edition of this article and other previous articles. We have corrected the following in accordance with the court documents that indicate the first name Gerth.
