UWI to Launch Law Degree Programme in Antigua, PM Says at Rural West Rally
ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Thursday night that a law degree programme has been confirmed for Antigua, marking a major expansion of tertiary education at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus.
Speaking at a campaign rally in St John’s Rural West, Browne pointed to the development as part of his administration’s record in widening access to higher education across the country.
“This government has delivered… the most significant development in Antigua and Barbuda since independence, and that is access to university education,” Browne said, referencing the establishment and growth of the Five Islands Campus.
He told supporters that the campus continues to expand its academic offerings and confirmed that a law programme is expected to begin as early as September, providing new opportunities for Antiguans and Barbudans to pursue legal studies at home.
The Five Islands Campus, which serves students from across Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), has been a central feature of the government’s education policy. Browne said expanding access to university education is key to social mobility and economic advancement.
“One of the best ways to lift people out of poverty is to give them access to education,” he said, linking the new programme to broader efforts to equip young people with skills for national development.
The Prime Minister also referenced ongoing infrastructure tied to education in the area, including the construction of a new Five Islands primary school, as part of what he described as a wider transformation of the constituency and surrounding communities.
The introduction of a law degree programme would reduce the need for students to study abroad and is expected to strengthen the country’s legal and professional sectors over time.
Browne made the remarks as he urged voters to support the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party in the upcoming general election, emphasizing what he described as a record of “performance, not promises” in delivering education and development initiatives.
