    Minister of Communication, Zouhair Bouamama

The Minister of Communication, Zouhair Bouamama, praised, Monday in Algiers, the efforts of the media community, which continues to strengthen its role in accompanying the comprehensive national development process led by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and consolidating the strengths in the nation’s awareness, enlightening public opinion, and fortifying the country. During a speech he delivered at a celebration organized on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, chaired by the President of the Republic, the Minister highlighted the continuation of work on “upgrading our media system to levels that will enable it to contribute effectively to this march led by the President of the Republic, consolidating the strengths in the nation’s consciousness, enlightening public opinion, fortifying our country, and consolidating the pillars of its stability, security, and development.”
In this regard, he appreciated the President of the Republic’s support for women and men in the media, who “accompany the state’s efforts to achieve successes and raise challenges, especially those related to highlighting our country’s great achievements at home and abroad and what the new, victorious Algeria is capable of, as well as their response, in word, image, and sound, to disinformation campaigns in defense of Algeria and its highest interests.”
He pointed out the keenness of the President of the Republic to strengthen “the interconnected relationship between freedom of the press as a human right and basic freedoms that must be constantly strengthened and the responsibility to adhere to professionalism and professional ethics that protect journalists from all abuses and deviations,” pointing to “the effort of the President of the Republic to support and guarantee freedom of expression, and to expand its scope in a way that provides more spaces for it away from any pressure or restriction except what is dictated by ethics, required by laws, and imposed by respect for national constants.” “The requirements of national security and the highest interests of the country.”
For this reason, the Minister of Communications reaffirmed that “freedom of the press is not just an inherent right of the journalist, but rather it is a cornerstone of our democratic structure and an important foundation for strengthening the foundations of our institutional edifice. It is a real guarantee for a vibrant society, jealous of its values, open to its world, and keeping pace with the times.”
Addressing the President of the Republic, the Minister said: “Today, in our country’s path to deepen the reforms that you launched, in the communications sector, we are working under your wise leadership, in order to effectively translate on the ground the new gains included in the laws framing the media space, in a way that ensures the deepening of the free and responsible practice of the profession, in order to enhance the citizen’s constitutional right to credible, professional national media.”
In this regard, the Minister referred to the sector’s efforts aimed at completing the process of the legal and regulatory framework for the sector, by issuing the texts that the President of the Republic directed “the necessity of completing their preparation” related to the profession of journalism and related professions, as well as the installation of the relevant control bodies and the Supreme Council for the Ethics and Ethics of the Journalist Profession, highlighting the sector’s efforts in the field of continuous training for journalists in order to develop their capabilities and make them more in control of artificial intelligence technology.
In this regard, he said, “The current thinking about adopting a new approach to promoting effective, modern, proactive government communication, adapted to digital transformations, and responsive to public service requirements, confirms the sector’s strategic vision based on enabling state institutions to strengthen their partnership with national media, in a way that guarantees the citizen’s right to access reliable information, and at the same time makes our media more ready to act as a central actor in the battle of awareness.”
By the way, Bouamama stressed that Algeria, like the countries of the world, celebrates this day, proud of the great strides made by the national press throughout a path full of achievements and challenges in which Algerian journalists lived through all the eras that our beloved country went through, and fought with their loyal compatriots in all its major battles, and contributed to achieving its victories.
The Minister of Communication also paid tribute to the sacrifices of the members of the national media family, “who stood with honor and pride in the front to confront terrorism and obscurantism that targeted the national state and its institutions,” including those who fell so that Algeria could remain standing tall and who presented, with courage and valor, a great lesson in patriotism to all of Algeria’s enemies.
