Martyr Al-Hafiz, May 4, 2026 (SPS) – The Ministry of the Occupied Territories and Communities called on the United Nations and its competent mechanisms to open an independent investigation into the grave violations targeting Sahrawi defenders in the occupied cities of Western Sahara.
The Ministry, in a statement, renewed its call on the United Nations and its competent mechanisms, including the Human Rights Council and Special Procedures, to open an urgent and independent investigation into the systematic violations committed against Sahrawi political detainees and human rights defenders, as violations that rise to the level of cruel and inhuman treatment in accordance with international humanitarian law.
The statement held the Moroccan occupation authorities fully responsible for the policy of systematic revenge against Sahrawi political detainees and their families, and to stop all forms of harassment and persecution, including arbitrary arrests, surveillance, siege, and preventing freedom of movement, assembly and expression.
The statement called for pressure for the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi political detainees, stopping judicial prosecutions of a retaliatory nature, and ensuring respect for their basic rights in accordance with international human rights standards.
The Ministry of Occupied Territories and Communities stressed the need to ensure international protection for Sahrawi human rights defenders, and to enable them to carry out their human rights activities without threat, intimidation or retaliation, while establishing permanent monitoring mechanisms for the human rights situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories.
It also renewed its call on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities in putting an end to the policy of impunity, and to oblige the occupying authorities to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
